A woman who says she was sexually assaulted by Jeffrey Epstein as a teenager at his Manhattan mansion sued the wealthy financier's estate and one of his longtime associates.

The filing is the start of a wave of lawsuits beginning Wednesday in New York under the 'Child Victims Act'- a state law which opens a one-year-window for people to sue over allegations of sexual abuse, no matter how long ago it occurred.

Epstein was arrested on July 6 and had pleaded not guilty to federal charges of sex trafficking, involving dozens of underage girls as young as 14, from at least 2002 to 2005.

He died Saturday while in federal custody, his apparent suicide provoked widespread outrage among US officials.

Attorney General William Barr removed the warden at the federal jail where the well-connected money manager was being held and put two guards on administrative leave.

The New York Times reported that the two guards on duty to watch Epstein were asleep for some or all of the three hours that Epstein is believed to have been left alone in his cell without checks.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday called for investigations.
