Seventeen U.S. Senate Democrats, led by a Jewish senator, are demanding accountability from Secretary of State Marco Rubio after a deadly Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed six journalists, including prominent Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif.
Lawmakers called the strike part of Israel’s “systematic targeting of journalists,” accusing the Israeli government of silencing media voices exposing Gaza’s devastation.
In their letter, the senators urged Rubio to press Israel for transparency, citing violations of international law and warning of risks to U.S. credibility and national security.
Israel has claimed al-Sharif was tied to Hamas, but has offered no compelling evidence.
