Six Lebanese soldiers were killed on Saturday in a powerful explosion at a Hezbollah weapons depot in Wadi Zibqin, near the Israeli border.
The Lebanese army said troops were dismantling munitions from the Iran-backed group’s facility when the blast occurred.
The tragedy comes just days after Beirut announced a plan to disarm Hezbollah by year’s end under heavy U.S. pressure, a move strongly opposed by both Hezbollah and Iran.
UN peacekeepers recently uncovered fortified tunnels and large weapons caches in the same area.
The incident underscores the volatile climate in southern Lebanon despite last year’s ceasefire with Israel, which mandated that only Lebanese state forces hold arms. Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets have continued, further inflaming tensions.
Investigations are underway into the cause of the deadly blast as leaders mourn the fallen soldiers.
