The UN’s top human rights official, Volker Türk, has strongly condemned U.S. sanctions on four ICC judges as “deeply corrosive” to international justice.
These judges, who ruled on cases involving alleged war crimes by U.S. forces in Afghanistan and arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, now face sanctions from the Biden administration.
Türk warned that targeting international judges for executing their duties endangers the rule of law.
The EU has backed the ICC, vowing to counter these sanctions and defend the court’s independence from political pressure.
