In some areas.

The heavy rain blamed for opening a large sinkhole on a marshall county highway is also affecting the roadway's re-opening.

The sink hole on highway 227 was patched just before the weekend.

An official with the alabama department of transportation said this weeks rain hasn't affected the work done on the sink hole - but said that concrete still has to seal what was patched.

The sink hole is 15 feet by 10 feet and 5 feet deep.

The frequent heavy rain in north alabama has caused roadways to run into problems. a spokesman for a commercial construction company says that sink holes can happen in your yard and driveway too - anywhere there's limestone under the surface.

Usually it's the rising level of the underground aquafer that happens when we have these heavy rains.

Again, once you determine where that water is coming in and causing that additional erosion, you can seal that up so it doesn't happen again.

In marshall county - the department of transportation said they're going to investigate both the north and south bound lanes of alabama 227 before re- opening.

They want to make sure there are no structural issues with the road.

This storm system left some damage just next door in dekalb county.
