3 federal judge robert summerhays hearing arguments in a group of acadiana bar owner' lawsuit against the governor and state over bar closures.

John bel edwards testifed in federal court monday afternoon here in lafayette regarding a lawsuit about his restrictions against bars... and its effectiveness in slowing the spread of covid-19...local bar owners, who are represented by jimmy faircloth, testified that the governors restrictions are 3 unfair -citing there is no clear difference between stand alone bars, and bars inside of a resturant.governor jon bel edwards says quote "in my opinion a bar is a bar whether i's a stand alone business or inside of a restaurant..... he also testified that ther's a significant number of cases that are traced bars.

After about 8 hours of litigation, closing arguments were around around 6pm.

Theres no ruling yet as judge summerhaye takes the case under advisement.

Doctor alex billioux , the assistant secretary of the louisiana department of health, also testified extensively on the stat's behalf.

Billioux noted that a spike in covid-19 infections among 18-29 year olds that occurred in the weeks after memorial day is tied to bars being allowed to open at 25 percent capacity as part of the governo's phase two proclamation he also credited the governo's decision to return bars to curbside-only service in july with helping stabilize case counts and hospitalization rates.billioux noted that bars are quote "kindling for infections" because people go to them to socialize, often have to stand closely and speak loudly due to loud music, and alcohol lowers inhibitions.
