While the holiday weekend may be over, indiana high school athletes and coaches had another reason to celebrate today... that's because, for the first time since mid- march, teams from all sports were allowed back on campus to resume athletic activities..

Our petar hood spent his evening at bishop dwenger high school, and he joins us now with more...supers: petar hood: ?yeah hunter, as a former high school athlete, i can tell ya conditioning on a 90 degree day in early july isn't something you typically look forward to..

But in this case, today is a day a lot of these kids have had circled on their calendars for months now... devon tippmann: "i've been looking foward to this forever.

It's just the fact that we didn't get to start 3 early, and we take that for granted most years, but this year's different, and i'm just super excited that we get to come back out here."narr: it's been a long four months for high school football teams all across the state.

And bishop dwenger is no different.

Vinny fiacable: "it's been really hard, especially from the team aspect, just growing.

Like you can lift by yourself and you can all these workouts by yourself or in small groups, but being with the team, it makes everything so different."

Narr: yeah, and different is a good way to describe the way these worouts will look compared to what these guys are used to.

There are a number of social distancing measures that have been put in place, including limited access to locker rooms, weight facilities, and even drinking fountains..jason garrett: "everybody wants their kids to be safe, and everyone wants to have a football season, so i think everybody's doing their best to navigate things and give it the do-dillegence that it deserves."tippmann: "it's definitely strange and a little annoying, but i think we'll embrace it and be just fine."narr: and while it will be strange and a little annoying at times, at the end of the day, these guys say they're willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they don't have to spend any more time apart than they already have..garrett: "going through this process, we all appreciate far greater what it means to be together.

That team atmosphere, that culture, that opportunity to just hang out.

I mean, that's what our coaches are most looking forward to.

I just want to see the guys.

There's guys i haven't seen in four months, so it's kind of like a reunion, you know?

Family reunion, and get back to work."

Hood: now it is worth noting these are only voluntary workouts.

We're still about a month away from offical practices and six weeks or so away from games.

Obviously a lot can happen between now and then, but this is certianly a step in the right direction.
