Future of high school sports for the Northern Section

CIF Northern Section is letting county public health officials decide if high school sports will happen in the fall of 2020.

California still have a chance to play this fall... action news now sports director vanessa romo shows us the plans.

The california interscholastic federation, which governs high school athletics announced monday that the fall sports season will be pushed to 20-21.

But the northern section --- decided to break away from the state.

I am super excited about getting these kids back to sports and just taking it a step further and really focusing on the fall.

The c-i-f northern section said its teams can begin league play when its county public health officials approve youth sports, including high school athletics.

The biggest thing now is what local agencies are saying and the cdc, butte county health, its really about being put on the watch list or not on the watch list... this means, teams may have to compete outside of their league based on if a county will let a high school play.

Paradise high's athletic director anne stearns says it's a lot of unknown, but she will plan for it.

First we need to put together a plan to keep our kids safe and everyone else safe.

I think the next step is getting our athletic directors together especially in butte county and making sure we are all on the same page.

If approved by the county, a few high schools hope to start season play by october... but if done, the teams will have to opt out of the c-i-f's regional and state championships that are now slated for next year... a hard pill to swallow for the former state champions to be honest with you.

I think every competitor wants to play for the top pinnacle spot in their sport.

Thats kind of my mind set.

I want to play for a state championship, but if our section is saying we're only going to play in the fall and our pinnacle is the section title than we'll shoot for it... but first... shoot for some kind of season for their athletes.

I know the importance, because of the fire and all of the things that have been taken away from all these kids.

I understand the importance of athletics and getting them back on the field and court.

I really dont want to see another group of seniors get cut out of sports, so if we're able to play in the fall, that's a good thing, if we're able to play in the spring that's a good thing, just so we can get some kind of season in some where.

Butte county public health says it follows state guidleines and as of now, recreational
