Specialists from Russia's Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography hoisted the whales into tanks aboard the "Professor Kaganovsky" research vessel in Srednyaya Bay near the port of Nakhodka in Russia's Far East.

The operation is expected to be completed by Friday (November 8).

The animals will be released at Uspenia Bay, also in the Primorye Region, according to a statement from the institute.

The plight of the animals, which were kept in Russia's Far East in cramped enclosures likened by Russian media to a whale "prison," became a cause celebre and prompted the Kremlin to intervene.
