Kwasi Kwarteng says the private meeting between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in North West England on Thursday is a "really significant move".
The business minister said it showed that, "on both sides we want to get to a deal".
Negotiations to avert a no-deal Brexit are hanging in the balance following the prime minister's conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which she is reported to have said there will be no Brexit deal with the UK unless Northern Ireland is in the customs union "forever".
