Pentagon to divert $3.6 billion to fund Trump’s wall

U.S. officials say more than 120 military construction projects will be put on hold so that $3.6 billion can be diverted to fund President Donald Trump's border wall.

Half the money would come from planned international projects, while the other half would come from projects in the U.S. The move is part of President Trump's declaration of a national emergency in February in order to gain access to funds to build his long-promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

President Trump made the wall a major campaign promise during the 2016 election.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) THEN-CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP SAYING IN SEPTEMBER 2016: "We're going to build the wall.

Mexico's going to pay for the wall." It's now, part of his hardline immigration policy - central to his 2020 bid.

Defense Department officials did not give details on which projects would be affected, saying they wanted to notify lawmakers first, which is reportedly expected to happen Wednesday.

The decision to divert the funding has already come under fire by Democratic lawmakers.

In a call with House Democrats, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said quote "stealing money from military construction at home and abroad will undermine our national security," according to an aide.

Officials said construction along the border could begin as early as within 100 days on land already owned by the federal government.
