A Look at the History of Ride-Hailing Apps

When was the last time you took a cab?

If you're a fan of Lyft or Uber , you might be curious as to how they came to be as popular as they are today.

Here's a breakdown of some of the top ride-hailing apps in the world and how they started.

It's only been 10 years since Uber launched.

But the ride-hailing service, which went public in May of 2019, was called UberCab at first.

Travis Kalanick, who would later be named CEO of the company, started Uber with Garrett Camp.

The two designed Uber to allow customers to order black car services from their phones.

Fast-forward to 2012, and Lyft--which started out as a part of Zimride--becomes its own company.

A couple of months later, Uber unveils its "UberX" feature, which allows users to hail cheaper cars.

But 2012 isn't over yet.

It's also the year that DiDi, the world's second largest ride-hailing app, launches in China.

Curious about what other milestones the popular ride-sharing apps have hit?

Watch to find out.
