The royal, political, and naval history of the Union Flag

Over the summer, flags - predominantly the union flag and St George’s cross - have appeared attached to a wide range of street furniture. In addition, red crosses have appeared on roundabouts, buildings and even a war memorial. Are these the acts of true patriots or a way of intimidating non-English/British people?
