In a major setback for peace in Eastern Europe, the Kremlin has poured cold water on any hopes of a Zelensky–Putin summit in the next 30 days.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared the meeting “unlikely,” citing irreconcilable differences between Ukraine and Russia’s draft proposals.
This comes amid growing U.S. pressure, with President Donald Trump threatening sweeping 100% secondary tariffs on Russia if a peace deal isn't reached by the looming 50-day deadline.
While Zelensky has repeatedly offered to meet Putin face-to-face, Moscow continues to dodge direct engagement.
Instead, Russia is sticking to a rigid draft memorandum first introduced in Turkey and refuses to consider Ukraine’s summit request before August-end.
Trump, visibly frustrated, warned that the lack of progress could trigger severe economic consequences.
With time running out and no summit in sight, the chances of diplomacy are fading fast.
