Today May 2, 2025 at 12:00 pm on OCP JJ Humphrey will be by himself today.
He will bring a report on the latest issues in the Department of Corrections.
According to the national Institutes of Health, about 1.4 deaths occur annually per 1,000 incarcerated people.
That includes prisons, which have a higher rate than jails.
The Department of Corrections reports approximately 21,000 inmates.
Based on my calculations using national average DOC should be approximately 29.4 deaths per year.
I contacted the Medical Examiner for 2023 and 2024 and as of September 2024 DOC was averaging 15 deaths per month.
Based on my calculations it appears DOC had approximately 180 deaths in 2024.
This would be approximately 6 times national average.
We are aware of approximately 3 deaths this week.
Plus we received a report that last fall two inmates reported death threats were ignored and both were murdered.
The report stated OIG was notified and did nothing.
We received a report cadet academy is the smallest ever.
How can Director Harpe anticipate managing Lawton if he cannot staff or manage the current Department.
