Butte County chose the non-profit Point of Contact to go into encampments and ask them how they prefer to live.

His hometown.

New tonight - butte county has asked a chico non-profit group to survey the unhoused population.

Action news now reporter carmela karcher is live in chico.

Carmela&what exactly is this organization asked to do?

Alan&the non- profit point of contact will go into encampments and ask them how they prefer to live.

Brandi laffins was born and raised in chico.

Like many&she hopes to see the city thrive.

But in order to do that&she and point of contact want to help a certain population p the homeless.

Since this non- profit already has a relationship with the homeless community& butte county chose point of contact to get unsheltered people where they want to be.

Brandi laffins/point of contact board member: "what we do is ask questions about how long they've been homeless, if they are from chico or butte county or if they are from somewhere else, what type of services do they think they need?

What would be helpful to them?

And what we are really trying to do is connect them to the services out there because a lot of them don't even know they are available."

Point of contact has already started this process.

And so far&they have conducted over 70 surveys.

But they know they have a lot more work to do.

Brandi laffins: "i don't think anyone wants to live in a tent.

I talked to a young gal who is out there and she is afraid.

She doesn't want to be in a tent.

I think most of us know that living in those conditions&we wouldn't want our animals living like that.

We need to find a solution for the community and for the unhoused people."

But what do people in the homeless community want?

I asked them.

Scott johnson/lives in chico: "some of these people are good people.

I don't know a lot of them but they are good.

They just need direction, but they have to want it too."

David cooper/lives in chico: "i'm hoping i can get an education out of this and that when i go into a house, maybe i can help people who are like this."

Point of contact hopes to give the completed survey to the county in the next couple of weeks.
