Good evening, i'm jodie o'brien, one local high school closing its doors to mourn the loss of one of their own.

They mourn the death of assistant principal at benton middle school.

Here's the latest with kilee thomas.

Benton high school canceling classes after the loss of their principle allowing students and staff to honor mccoy at his funeral service.

Just shy of a thousand people are expected to attend mccoy's funeral.

Remembering him as a lifelong educator, friend and staple of the south side.

Mccoy was born and raised in st.

Joseph and graduated from benton.

His teaching career began in 1998 and he spent the last 13 years as assistant principal.

He was the assistant principal of the year at 2011 and 2018.

This pillar of the south side will receive the memorial service he rightfully deserved.

He was important to our community and lots of kids.

He was an important part to his family.

Of course, he's a leader, father of three young men.

15, 13 and 10.

So, we have a sad thing here.

And we are going to help them through this grieving process and help them move forward.

Mccoy's celebration of life service is being held thursday at 10:30 a.m.

At grace evangelical church.

The service will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person.

Because he love fireworks, a fire work show will follow the service.
