Two Chico city leaders say there are more beds available for homeless

Mayor Andrew Cooldige and Vice Mayor Kasey Reynolds believe something may be missing from the 2019 state continuum of care report.

Open new at 6-- are there more beds available for the homeless in chico?

That's what two city leaders are saying.

Action news now reporter dani masten joins us in the studio - why do they believe that dani?

Mayor andrew cooldige and vice mayor kasey reynolds believe something may be missing from the 2019 state continuum of care report - detailing the number of beds available for homeless.

Kasey reynolds/city of chico vice mayor "one of the discrepancies is that there could actually be more beds available and more beds in our community than what is being reported."

"what exactly is the discrepancy you guys are talking about?"

Kasey reynolds/city of chico vice mayor "there are private organizations and there are religious organizations that do sober living environments and things like that who don't necessarily report to the coc and the numbers that are being provided today are strictly numbers based upon the coc findings."

I took reynold's concerns directly to the continuum of care and asked why doesn't it include numbers from private organizations.

Ed mayer/executive director for housing authority (start with phoner grahic, then data then building) "we try to encompass the work of all the organizations in butte county working on homelessness.

That does not to say it is all inclusive in its data collection because we are very much state driven and those demographics that we are being asked to collect has certain parameters so not everyone is included for every reason."

Dani masten out of the 44 coc areas in the state - butte county ranks 10th overall.

That is better than yuba and sutter county, tehama and shasta county and better than sacramento and even los angeles.

(((full screen graphic))) reynolds says right now 60 beds are available at the torres shelter and more could become availble with butte county now in the red tier.

The new jesus center will also have 60 beds ready in may.

And the town house motel houses between 40 and 50 homeless as well.

I asked mayor andrew coolidge why he decided to release this information.

Andrew coolidge/city of chico "it's really to inform our community about what has happened and is happening and what opportunities are out there.

" on tuesdayÃbutte county supervisors set aside 500,000 dollars to build 60 alumminum single person shelters.

They're still working on a location on where they'll put the shelters..

Debbie..

Dani - how many beds were available in 2019 in butte county ?

Great question debbie.

931 beds were available in butte county.

The chico city council will meet next tuesday to discuss implementing addional shelter beds.
