Announcer says "now, from the jim sigel automotive sports desk, newswatch 12 sports with cameron derby."

Well on early signing day, a local kid joins the big guys.

Hidden valley standout quarterback sam vidlak signed a national letter of intent to play at oregon state university.

Vidlak has the first full-ride quarterback pac-12 scholarship from the grants pass area since the late 1960's.

Vidlak signed his letter of intent today at hidden valley high school.

He was surrounded by his family and coaches.

It was an emotional ceremony.

Many people stepped up to talk about his character, which aside from his raw talent, seems to have drawn him into the oregon state coaching staff.

Vidlak is ecstatic to enroll early and to get going at spring practice.

"i was just taken by surprise at how great of an opportunity it really was.

It was something i couldn't pass up.

Since coach smith has got their, they have continued to build and improve and i just want to add onto that and do my part to contribute the best i can to help that program reach new heights.

You know, i am super excited to play for coach smith and i think it is going to be pretty fun."

Vidlak practically rewrote the record book at hidden valley and put his name right on the cover.

He is a dual threat guy that brings a lot of maturity and understanding of the game.

"kind of finishing up with sam vidlak, quarterback.

Can throw it, make plays with his feet, loves the game, comes from a family where the dad coaches.

Coach lindgren went down and identified him early.

He plays baseball, multiple sports.

We are really fired up on his addition."

Don't forget that once upon a time, vidlak was already committed to the university of montana.

Newswatch 12's josh shelton asked coach smith why he thinks oregon state was able to make him flip.

"got a bunch of respect for that place, the university of montana and the coaches there.

I spent two great years there.

So, i can see why sam was interested in that place.

I loved it.

But at the end of the day it is both sides trying to find the right fit and sam is the right fit with us."

Remember i said vidlak tried to rewrite the hidden valley record book.

Well, 207 completions, the most by a quarterback there.

Nearly 35 hundred passing yards.

The most touchdowns in a season.

And he set osaa state championship records for comletions and yards.

He is also the only hidden valley athlete to ever be named the conference player of the year in multiple sports.

We will talk even more about sam's journey to oregon state when you join us on college football gamenight this saturday.

We have a sam vidlak feature for the finale of this year's gamenight season.

Pay attention though.

The show will start at 8 or after the football game
