News 10 bureau chief gary brian tells us what knox county is doing to be ready for the next step.
Fighting covid-19 has been a difficult task for health professionals in knox county.
"today we have two people on ventalators.
One is a citizen of knox county.
But we have gone from a relative case load of eight up to fifteen."
Everyone is waiting for the moment a vaccine to covid-19 is discovered.
Knox county health officer dr. alan stewart says that could happen in just months.
"we anticipate that the covid vaccine is going to be supplied by the government.
We do anticipate that a vaccine will probably become available after phase three studies are completed and it's been approved toward the end of the year."
Knox county has applied to be a distribution site for the state of indiana.
Making sure that those who need the vaccine will get it as soon as possible.
"we expect that high risk people, such as first responders, people working in hospitals around covid patients, and then other high risk groups.
Particularly the elderly and in particular people in long term care settings where most of the deaths have occurred in the united states will be prioritized."
Stewart believes the vaccine will make it to the general public after phase four studies are completed.
That's estimated to be sometime next year.
"we have to continue to be extremely careful.
With colder weather everyone is going inside, this is more dangerous.
With the schools going to winter indoor sports that's going to be a higher risk as well.
So we really have to be more deligent than ever."
