School superintendents ask Gov. Cuomo to delay school sports until Jan. 2021

After Governor Cuomo announced the latest state guidance allowing some sports to proceed this fall, school leaders ask him to reverse the decision and delay sports further.

Low-risk sports can return in september - school leaders around the state have requested he reverse that decision and extend the delay.

The council of school superintendents sent a letter to the governor today asking that he pu back thetart of all schoolpts until jaary firsto allow schls to focus on getting students back in the classroom before extra-curriculars begin.

The superintendents say that they don't understand why physical education classes must have increased social distancing yet close proximity athletics are considered safe.

They also said that logistical challenges makes it harder to plan for sports both in terms of facility management and resources while juggling return to school.

Nassau county schools - down on long island have already made the decision to delay sports until january.

The governor addressed these latest issues today.

Section executive directors will meet tomorrow to discuss the latest guidance and the state athletic association's covid-19 task force will meet again next week to talk logistics of the fall season.
