Food insecurity concerns grow amid coronavirus pandemic

More than 50 million Americans could face food insecurity by the end of the year, including around 30,000 people locally.

As news 18's balint szalavari reports, the increase is linked to projected increases in poverty and unemployment due to the coronavirus.

Millions across the nation are still facing the impacts of covid-19..

And a new study by feeding america is projecting a spike in food insecurity as a result of the pandemic.

Alting: "it's a shame that we have not fought harder to get food to certain americans that need it."

According to the study, more than 50 million americans could face food insecurity by the end of the year.

That number includes around 30 thousand people locally.

Now, senator ron alting says it's time to have conversations on how to address hunger in the community.

Alting: "what can we do collaborative from the state level, from the federal level and from the local level to feed our citizens in tippecanoe county?"

Alting says he would also like to have conversations between other local state representatives and local food bank leaders.

Alting: "let them share with us what areas they need help in and what their suggestions are to get that help."

According to alting, several local catering companies and corporations like wal- mart and payless have been donating to local food banks.

He hopes to see others join in providing for those in need, especially during these times.

Alting: "i think we've got to sit down and mark who is doing good and who we have not contacted to see if we can get on board with them."
