City of Creswell plans new 4th of July traditions, cancels traditional celebration

The Creswell Chamber of Commerce said they have partnered with local businesses to allow the community to still celebrate the day--but in a safe manner.

Of july celebration that attracts tens of thousands of people -- has been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Kezi 9 news reporter kennedy dendy spoke to residents to find out how they feel about one of the city's favorite traditions -- being scrapped.

Carolyn: "we have people that come from the far ends of the state, even from out of state to come to the creswell 4th of july parade."

It's a city less than six thousand, but their pride every year stands tall and strong.

Carolyn: "this community is a small community, and when you pack in hundreds of people together in a small space, it could be dangerous, so i think its good that they cancelled the parade.

It's sad but safety needs to be first."

Nearly 30,000 people line the streets every year for jet flyovers and marching bands, as flags are waved left and right.

Bridge: this is just one of many events cancelled this year due to the pandemic -- but local businesses have teamed up with the city to come up with alternative activities that people can enjoy -- safely.

Creswell's chamber of commerce said that, this year, decorating contests will be held..such as "best decorated business" and "most patriotic pet."

But the city's traditional celebration will still be missed by many, millie- "it makes me feel sad."

Creswell resident millie pellerin says she looks forward to the city's festivities*every year.

Millie- "just the whole thing.

Seeing people.

Not just the parade itself but seeing the people who enjoyed it."

But residents told me that the true meaning behind the day...remains the same.

Al: "the independence day celebration of our country and our freedoms. and thats why we want to keep that going and thats equal for everybody.
