Civic Park grand reopening delayed

Kidsports was hoping to open their new fieldhouse in mid June, but may pushing it back until Lane County enters Phase III.

Officials determined that the wooden structure was burned by four young boys -- some of whom were sentenced on arson charges.

Kezi 9 news reporter andrew haubner explains what the future holds for the newly invented civic park and how it'll be a place where the community can*reconnect and heal after the pandemic is all over.

The first two weeks of june were supposed to mark a triumphant return of civic park and not only the start of lane united's season but kick off a new era of kidsports here in eugene.

But due to coronavirus, that will have to wait.

Bev smith: our relationship with the eugene civic alliance in moving into the kidsports field house at civic park has certainly been delayed inthat regard.

It's been a challenge to have our plans move forward.

The kidsports field house at civic park was slated to open some time in mid june...but executive director bev smith says that safety comes first and any type of reopening celebration may have to wait for the fall.

In the meantime...they've been tinkering with plans ahead of phase ii and an eventual phase iii.

Bev smith: right now we're still in a delay.

Our staff is really working hard behind the scenes to introduce some programs that we're going to have in mid july.
