The parking lots were full at east hills mall this afternoon, but people weren't there for the reopening of some of the retail stores inside.

Good evening, i'm alan van zandt.

It was the first giveaway for the federal farms to families food program and kq2's danielle soxy was there for the craziness that it was.

Hundreds of cars lined up...and even wrapped around the east hills mall wednesday evening...waiting...to receive fresh produce(nat.

Sound)"it's just amazing that this many people would come out farmers to families program is giving away produce the usda purchased from farmers....who would have had to throw the food away otherwise food, all the produce and everything came from go-fresh produce in tulsa, oklahoma" (nat.

Sound)groups from missouri, kansas, and even oklahoma partnered up to get the project going...and all the help was needed...."a host of different entities that are coming together to help with this project.

There's no way that one entity can handle this, as you can see for yourself.

We're overwhelmed...overwhelmed with joy because so many people are here."individuals were allowed to pick up food for their families, and even neighbors... bringing in thousands of people according to organizers..."so if they are picking up for five families, they get six gallons of milk and five boxes of produce.

We had to limit it that way to try to get it to go as far as it will go tonight."(nat.

Sound)with plenty of food to go around...two truckloads to be exact..."we'll be here until every last box is given out tonight"(nat.

Sound) reporting in st.

Joseph, danielle soxy, kq2 news this event is lasting 6 weeks.
