World's Second-Oldest Airline Files for Bankruptcy Due to COVID-19 According to a statement released on its website on Sunday, Colombian carrier Avianca filed for bankruptcy.
The move was due to the "unforeseeable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic." Avianca CEO Anko van der Werff The airline employs 21,000 people throughout Latin America.
According to Avianca's website, nearly 90% of the countries in which the airline operates are under total or partial travel restrictions.
The airline was founded in 1919.
