On The Beat 5/6/20 - Brooks Eye Center

Brianne Speaks, Practice Manager at Brooks Eye Center, joins us today to talk about lens technology.

Troy thompson: welcome to on the beat everyone, i'm troy thompson.

Joining me in the studio today is brianne speaks, practice manager at brooks eye center and today we're talking all about lens technology.

Is there such a thing?

Brianne speaks: absolutely.

Troy thompson: welcome back to the show my friend.

Brianne speaks: thank you so much.

Troy thompson: how are you?

Brianne speaks: good.

Troy thompson: good.

All right.

Lens technology.

What should i be expecting from my lenses?

Brianne speaks: your lenses and your glasses should accomplish several things.

You want your lenses to correct the vision issue that you're having, whether it be far away, up close or a combination of both.

You want your lenses to be comfortable and then you want your lenses to, your glasses as a whole need to represent who you are and kind of be a reflection of your image.

Troy thompson: that's true and it's a fashion statement right?

Brianne speaks: absolutely.

Right.

Troy thompson: now, do i nowadays need more than one pair of glasses?

Brianne speaks: it's a great idea.

We love, our patients are a lot happier when they have multiple pairs.

We suggest your- troy thompson: why is that?

Brianne speaks: we suggest your everyday pair.

You like to have a statement pair for a day when you're feeling a little sassy.

Yeah.

You need good sun protection.

That's a must.

And then you also, a lot of people need a hobby pair or an occupational pair.

Depending on the type of work they do, they may need something different throughout the work day to kind of help them out.

Troy thompson: oh, i never thought that.

It's quite amazing isn't it?

Brianne speaks: it is.

It really is.

Troy thompson: all right.

Well, this was quite interesting to me.

What's the difference between traditional lenses and digital lenses?

And i'd never heard of digital lenses.

Brianne speaks: there are, the technology's changed so much through the years.

As far as progressive addition lenses, those are multifocals which we all like that help you see at several different focal lengths.

They have, the traditional surfacing, it's just an old fashioned way of creating the lens.

And a lot of people had some issues with that as far as distortion.

They could not adjust from channel to channel.

We have a digitally surfaced lens now.

It's surfaced in a more sophisticated way, using lasers and it surfaces the whole backside of the lens and it just eliminates a lot of the distortions and makes for more natural vision.

Troy thompson: interesting.

I'd love to know more about that.

All right.

Let's talk a little bit about something you brought up earlier on, which i didn't ask you then.

Sun protection.

What do you mean by that?

Brianne speaks: yes.

All sun lenses are not created equal.

It's very important.

You don't want to just have a dark lens to make you more comfortable in the sun.

That's important, but you want to protect your eyes from those uv rays.

Uv rays are what leads us to cataracts later on in life, and so having a good uv protection is important, but also a polarized lens that's going to make distortions go away.

It's going to make things a lot crisper and clearer.

Troy thompson: i got you.

All right.

Now we all know, look, i'm sure you at home buy online.

We all do, right?

Why is it crucial that we should be buying our glasses and lenses, i should say, from brooks eye center for example, than online?

Brianne speaks: right.

It's a great question.

You can find great deals online.

It's essentially kind of the old saying, "you get what you pay for."

In our office or in any private practitioner's office, you're going to have customized fittings and adjustments.

You're going to have service after the sale.

You can come in, we can do adjustments, we can work with you if you're having any issues with your lenses.

That's what we're there for.

And then also a lot of times people have insurance benefits they want to use and they can't do that if they're shopping at an online retailer.

Troy thompson: oh, i didn't know that.

Brianne speaks: they can use that there in our office.

Troy thompson: well it's, look, i'm a big believer in buying things like that at a local business because do you know how many times i've sat on my glasses?

And i've taken them into my local guy and i've said, "hello."

He's like, "troy, what are you doing?"

"i don't know what i do.

It just happens."

Brianne speaks: exactly, that's what we're there for.

Troy thompson: do you know what i mean?

It's crazy.

But i will say one thing about having a local optometrist and some of them instead of versus buying something online, is that local support for local business as well.

And we appreciate what you do here in the community.

I think brooks eye center is the leading optometrists here in columbus, so thank you so much.

Brianne speaks: thank you.

Troy thompson: we appreciate it.

If you want to find out more about brooks eye center, there it all is up on the screen.

We'll be back after this
