Hospitals prepare for elective surgeries to resume

County.

In about six hours -- governor kay ivey is expected to announce her plan to reopen the state's economy and when she does-- huntsville hospital will have a better idea of when it can start performing elective surgeries again.

Waay 31's rodneya ross is live outside the hospital this morning.

Rodneya -- how is huntsville hospital preparing for the surgeries to return?

Elective surgeries were put on hold so the hospital could focus on fighting the coronavirus.

But once the state reopens -- the hospital plans to start performing those surgeries again -- and bring back furloughed employees.

Right now, there is no specific date set for elective surgeries to resume-- but hospital officials tell us they're planning on sometime next month.

The hospital told us it's getting ready to be up and running whenever they get the green light from the state.

All elective surgeries were put on hold to free up resources to fight coronavirus instead.

By not having elective surgeries, you are utilizing less ppe across the board, and there are less people in and out of the hospital and interacting with each other, so it serves two purposes.

We also learned once elective surgeries resume, furloughed employee will start returning to work.

Patients will also be screened for coronavirus before surgery.

This morning we'll be hearing from the c-e-o of crestwood hospital at the daily madison county news conference.

We're expect to find out how the hospital is preparing for the state to reopen.
