'I'm afraid I'll give my child COVID-19': fears of an Italian doctor

Italian doctor Cecilia Bartalena has spoken of how she lives in daily fear that she will infect her four-year-old daughter with coronavirus.

Joe Davies reports.

Like many doctors, Cecilia Bartalena is used to being able to put work to the back of her mind when she gets home.

But all that has changed.

The 35-year-old spends long hours treating coronavirus patients in the Italian city of Pisa.

Now she fears she'll bring the deadly virus back with her and infect her family.

Her husband filmed her talking about her anxieties at home.

So I have to try to rationalize the situation and think that I am doing it for a greater good." When she gets in from work each day, she heads straight to the shower.

Then she dons a mask before hugging her four-year-old Petra.

She now sleeps in her daughter's room and eats in a separate part of the kitchen to the rest of the family.

It's hard because Petra does not understand because it's hard to explain to a 4-year-old child that we are locked inside a hospital because of the coronavirus and because I'm not used to stay away from you.

We share our tasks due to the quarantine and it is complicated." In the gruelling six hour shifts, she's not able to go to the bathroom or drink anything.

She only has a light breakfast.

She says it makes her less thirsty at work.

And she yearns for the days when she can once again have a more personal relationship with patients and their families.

Like many millions, Bartalena is having to cope with a huge change to both work life and home life - and accept that a return to full normality is a while away yet.
