Crime numbers for the romney meadows apartment complex.

In 20-16 the department worked with the property owner to increase security measures.

News 18's meredith hackler reports the numbers show a decrease in some crimes an increase in others.

The the lafayette police department has had it's issues with romney meadows in the past.

Which is why when the complex was taken over by new management at he end of 20-15 the department worked with the new owners to increase security measures.

"what we try to do is get all the stakeholders involved, both financial stakeholders and the quality of life stakeholders everybody who is being effected by a particular problem we try to get them involved and the more people that are involved the easier it is to solve that problem."- brown the security upgrades included improved lighting in the area, a larger perimeter fence, closing the old romney entrance, and adding security cameras.

We talked with several people who didn't want to be on camera who live behind romney meadows..

Some say since the fence was put up they've seen a decrease in criminal activity..

However others in the neighborhood don't agree.

"the kids always come by and tear down the fence and come over here and steal everyones cars so you have to make sure you lock all your cars up.

We even put security cameras... i don't think it got any better."- daquann warren these are the crime numbers for romney meadows from 20-15 to 20-19.

You can see that certain crimes dropped after 20-16 which is when the security upgrades were implemented, but in 20-19 some of those crime rates increased.

Sergeant brown says those numbers don't always reflect the true crime rate of an area.

"that increase in numbers doesn't necessarily represent an increase in the frequency of the crime it just indicates and increase in the frequency of an arrest."-brown regardless of what the numbers look like, police say an increase in community involvement has made it easier to investigate the cases they do have.

"it's a lot easier for us to identify suspects and figure out where people live because there is a lot more information coming from people who live there."-brown we did reach out to romney meadows for comment but we did not recieved a response.
