The Marshall Plan, officially known as the European Recovery Program (ERP), was an American initiative to aid Western Europe, in which the United States gave over $12 billion (approximately $128 billion in current dollar value) in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War II.

Proposed by Secretary of State George C.

Marshall in 1947, the plan was in operation for four years beginning in April 1948.
