A new West Lafayette Fire Department device is revolutionizing public fire-response training

The west lafayette fire department wants everyone in the community to be able to say (yes.

That's because of a new mobile fire-safety training they're planning to roll out this year.

News 18's micah upshaw is here in the studio this morning to explain.

Micah?

This training will allow the community to get as close as possible to fighting a real fire -- without the danger of it.

And the training is created to teach both the public and firefighters.

On your screen is the digital training system.

It comes with three main tools - the box that simulates a digital fire.

A laser-censored fire extinguisher.

And a laser-censored fire-hose.

These two tools are the same weight as a real extinguisher and fire hose.

The training goal is to teach people how to correctly aim these tools at a fire to get it to go down.

Firefighters say they've shown up to several fires where an extinguisher wasn't used properly.

And in some cases, that can make the fire spread even more.

Hopefully with the extinguisher they catch it early enough that they can put it out and we can just come and help them clean up the mess.

They key here is proper use at the proper time, the proper fire and reducing the loss of property.

The department got this device thanks to a 25-thousand dollar grant from leary firefighters foundation.

The department has already started training city employees.

The goal is to provide this service for west lafayette schools, businesses, and those living in student housing.

Firefighters will be demonstrating this device at the next farmer's market.
