The latest on Val Bialas Ski area

Val Bialas is one of only 4 ski areas in the entire country that's placed in the heart of a city.

But for the past couple of years, the slopes have been closed to the public.

For the greater part of 2 years.

Even on snow days liketoy the city who says they would only open if they had enough snow to do so.

News channel 2's brent kearney now reports when the ski area may open and what needs to be done in order to do so.

Its one of only 4 ski areas in the entire country that's sat right in the heart of a city.

But for the past couple of years its been mostly closed to the public, .

None .

None "unfortunately we're not skiing this year, covid being the main reason.

But we also had to do some budget issues with val bialas because of covid we had to move some funds around."

The slopes were open only periodically when there was enough snow to ski.

One of the main reasons the previous owners turned the property over to the back in 2017.

"over the last 20 years, we've had some private enterprises come in here thinking they could make a go of it.

They started out strong and maybe they made it work for a bit, but they could never get the revenue they needed to make it worth while."

"now one of the most difficult aspects about reopening the ski area is the snow."

We're very inconsistent with having snow here.

We always talked about maybe if we could keep snow on the slopes then maybe we would see an increase.

We dont know because it hasnt happened.

"what it really needs is snow making.

And with snow making you have to have water and we dont have those things and they're big expensive things to have."

But the city is not giving up and is targetting to reopen next year.

"it gives us a year to solicit some kids and people that want to work.

Hopefully next year we will be doing an interview with skiers coming down the hill and we will be talking about that again."
