Southern Minnesota organizations participate in Welcoming Week

This week is "welcoming week" through the organization "welcoming america," it's bringing together people from all backgrounds to help create a more inclusive community.

Kimt news 3's madelyne watkins joins us live this morning to tell us how you can participate.

One easy thing you can do... is post a picture with this paper on social media.

The meaning behind this is it shows your in support of welcoming anyone and everyone to your community.

"welcoming america" is a national organization that provides support for communities that are wanting to become more inclusive and welcoming.

Many local organizations participate in "welcoming america," such as university of minnesota extension and southeast minnesota together.

This week is "welcoming week" when all of these different organizations really push for their goals.

The extension educator and member of southeast minnesota together, jennifer hawkins, tells me it's up to each individual person and their community to decide what and how becoming more inclusive looks "so we're not saying this is how you be more welcoming, but just think about ways that you as an individual could be more welcoming to newcomers.

How you can open doors, create spaces for people to feel like they're part of the community, whether they've lived there for 2 years or 20 years.

Sometimes if you weren't born in a town, it can be difficult to feel part of the community."

There are many events that you can take part in this week if you're interested.

The ?city of austin is hosting an event, riverland community college is participating this week, project fine in winona and university of minnesota extension is hosting an online series this week.
