Cases continue to climb across the show-me state, city leaders in st.

Joseph continue to debate whether or not a mandatory mask ordinance for the city is the way to go.

Kq2's ron johnson talked to city councilman on both sides of the conversation today, he has more.

Last week's decision not to move forward with a citywide mask mandate was supported by most of the city council.

But not all of it.

Well i think it's always a good idea to err on the side of caution, i believe that mask are the least inconvenient way to avoid transmission of covid-19 councilman brian myers was one of three votes for the ordinance, he says requiring masks could have positive impacts on not just the city's health but on the economy as welli think there's a lot of people that would come out in st.

Joseph in public and spend their money here if council will take this next step and have a mask mandate in public spaces.

But those on the other side of this conversation also cite the economy to justify their position against the ordinanceyou know you just just about killed the small businesses the restaurants and bars are just now starting to recover, and you tell those people in there they gotta wear a mask when they go to a restaurant and a bar?

You might as well close 'em up they also say the health threat to us here in the city is too low to warrant such a responseand so with hospital admissions as low as they are the death rate as low as it is, i think we should just let it go get it over with and be done.

Supporters of the mask ordinance say with covid cases rising across the country it's only a matter of time before cases spike close to home, they say they want to be proactive.

That way we're prepared to deal with it, in case it gets worse here in the state of missouri.
