Hands-free law making its way to Indiana roadways

Starting July 1st, Indiana drivers will be seeing a new hands-free law on the roadways.

This morning.

Starting july 1st..

A "hands free" law will go into effect here in indiana.

News 10's jordan kudisch first introduced you to the law a few weeks ago.

And she's outside in our parking lot to remind "you" wha to expect in just a few days.

If you get caught using one of these while in motion.... you'll have to pay the fines.

Here's how the new law will work.

In the state of indiana..

A hands free law is already in effect.

However..

The new law stops you from using the phone "only" when in motion.

So if you're stopped at a light..

You can use it..

But when you press on the "gas"... it's time to put it away.

The new law encourages you to use "bluetooth" and other "hands free" devices.

And... texting being one of the leading cause of teen death... it could help lower the statistics.

"state police" say it's not worth risking a life..

By changing a song... or checking a text.

"there's studies that's been conducted and it's going to save approximately 130 lives here in the state of indiana by this new law coming into effect and it's going to help keep our roadways safer for all the citizens out here traveling."

Coming up..

Why state police say they're hopeful this new law could save at least hundred lives a year.
