Police retrieve kite stuck on top of building in Bali amid safety warnings about flying them

Footage shows policemen in Bali retrieving kites that were stuck on electric power lines.

Officers used ladders and bamboo poles to remove the kites that posed a risk to passing motorists.

Some of the kites recovered still had the yarn dangling down, which raised fears that people could get tangled in them.

Bali's kite flying season during the hot summers has become a concern for the local police after a motorcycle rider died when his neck was caught in a kite string on the road.

While earlier this month, a man was seen risking his life by climbing a 10-metre high satellite dish pole to retrieve his stuck kite.

Adjunct Police Commissioner Adi Sulistyo Utomo, Head of the Denpasar Police Traffic Unit said: "We urge the public to play with their kites in a safe place away from buildings.'' Officers have also urged motorbike riders to be more careful when driving in the kite season.

Balinese are known for their long-standing tradition of flying kites in the rice paddies during the harvest season when the wind is the strongest.

The island is known for its Bali Kite Festival where local and foreign competitors build large and intricately decorated kites to fly in the Padang Galak area during the dry season.
