You're taking a live look at city hall in downtown huntsville where less than an hour ago - the city council concluded a special called meeting.

During that meeting -- huntsville police chief mark mcmurray presented an "after-action review."

In it -- he continued to defend how the police department handled protesters on june 3rd.

"i had every authority and right to disperse that crowd because of the criminal intent that was showing up ready to fight police officers."

During that protest -- police used tear gas and bean bag rounds to disperse the crowd of protesters who continued to gather and march hours after a peaceful protest held by the naacp ended.

As that meeting took place inside city hall -- dozens of protester gathered outside the building to voice their frustration with the way the department handled the situation.

Thank you for joining us tonight -- i'm dan shaffer.

Najahe sherman is off tonight.

We have team coverage for you following tongiht's developments.

We begin with waay 31's max cohan -- he was outisd eduring the protest.

Max dan, many of those who attended tonight's gathering left just as upset as when they arrived, feeling chief mcmurray and the department aren't accurately depicting what happened on june first and june third "if they're saying that they were justified to shoot tear gas into a peaceful crowd, they're lying."

While a special huntsville city council meeting was being held tonight, dozens gathered outside and watched a live stream of the meeting on a tv one organizer brought.

One man who said he was at the june 3rd protest said he wants to raise awareness of what actually took place that night.

"i hope that the response that we receive from the city council is appropriate for his actions and lack of actions in other cases."

The group often reacted while watching the meeting, occasionally booing and starting chants.

Austin weld lead several chants and said listening to chief mcmurray speak sparked something in him.

"he's talking and it just doesn't make no sense.

And so it's like - i think the way he's trying to portray it is out that we are just - is that we were here for bad intentions ... i was like if you're gonna tell the story, tell it all the way through."

Weld says he plans on fighting for justice for all.

"i feel like we still need some more work to do, and i don't know long it might take, but ill be out here with them as much as i need to."

While there were some strong emotions, everyone out here watching the chief's presentation did so peacefully.
