Florence police searching for suspect who shot at officer, who returned fire

Happening now... state investigators are trying to find the person who shot at a florence police officer!

The shooting started on thompson street around 2 am.

There was a brief shootout - but neither the officer or suspect were shot.

Florence police tell me a patrolling officer saw a suspicious person near some cars here along thompson street.

The officer went to ask him what was going on and that's when the shots rang out.

That became the second scene in the case - after investigators found a car possibly used during the shooting.

Florence police then called in the alabama law enforcement agency to investigate.

The state isn't releasing much information on the shooting, other than to confirm they're handling the case.

It's unclear if the person who shot at the officer is in custody or not.

It's also unclear if the person acted alone.
