Jackson County Commissioner Rick Dyer has started a petition to have contact sports played during Phase II in Oregon.

But the jackson county commissioner is trying to change that.

(topic key) rick dyer started a petition last friday calling for youth and high school sports to be allowed during phase two.

That petition, as of 5-45 tonight, was nearing 10 thousand signatures.

Signatures included high school athletes and coaches from southern oregon pressing for a fall season.

Under current phase-two guidelines, non-contact sports are allowed, but contact sports are prohibited.

However, professional and college sports programs have been cleared for on-campus voluntary workouts if they have adequate and ample tests for athletes.

Dyer says if it can be done at the pro and college level, it can be recreated at the high school and youth level.

To explore the ways that it can be done.

I don't think that those plans have been explored yet, and i think they need to be explored fully.

And i think they need to be given the weight that they deserve."

Newswatch 12 sports reached out to the governor's office today and charles boyle, the deputy communications director issued a statement.

In it he states, quote, our office continues to engage in conversations with stakeholders from the professional level to the youth sports level about how sports activities can resume safely in oregon boyle goes on to say, quote, the current recommendation we have received from health experts is that it is not yet safe for oregon's youth to return to participating in contact sports, end quote.

And in regards to professional and college athletes returning to play, boyle says they are still finalizing what a return to play would
