More homeless housing help could be coming to Chico

If the new shelter does move forward, it would be a temporary five-month shelter.

House homeless in hotel during the pandemic..

May help some people stay off the streets for good!

Action news now reporter kristian lopez is live in chico, kristian, why can we expect some long-term impacts from this program?

It's called project "room key."

It's temporary& the city is thinking about other ways to help..... joy amaro/chico homeless solutions coordinator: we are pursuing the idea of opening up another low barrier shelter&..

Joy amaro is the homless solutions coordinator for chico.

She says: "project room key" has helped 131 people get off the streets during the coronavirus.

Joy amaro: it's been very successful it's been an incredible moment to stabilize individuals who haven't been stable.

Now the city is considering opening up a new low barrier shelter.

Joy amaro:it's in preparation and trying to be proactive in what's transpiring with what perhaps of the end of project room key&..

Kristian stand up: this is the proposed location for the low barrier shelter and it would have 169 beds.

Amaro says the lease has still not been secured and there would still be a lot to do.

Amaro: staffing, implementing policies and procedures, there's been talk with the torres shelter to lift their model and put it into another building, so the systems and stuff like that are in place.

If it moves forward it would be a temporary 5 month shelter....they are also looking at other ways to help people transition out of the hotels.... everyday new relationships are being made with property managers, companies that are willing to rent to individuals in project room key which is incredible especially during the pandemic.

I spoke with businesses in the area, coming up at 6 hear what they have to say about the proposed shelter.

Live in chico kl since project room key started 25 people have been able to find permanent housing.
