Dietitian On Coronavirus Impact - Part 2

Najahe Sherman is joined by Carmen Moyers, a clinical dietitian with Huntsville Hospital, to talk about cooking classes offered by the hospital for low income families to show them how to eat healthy on a budget.

>> najahe sherman: welcome back.

Every night at 6:00 p.m.

We are taking you deeper into the impact of the coronavirus.

Tonight i am joined by carmen moyers a clinical dietitian with huntsville hospital.

And carmen, we understand that you teach cooking classes for low-income families to show them how to eat healthy on a budget.

That is so terrific.

Can you walk us through the classes and how they help the families?

>> yes, it is new to huntsville hospital this past year.

It's been so wonderful.

There are six-week education nutrition classes and it's geared towards low-income families but anybody who feels looic they need the help can join the class.

Each week goes over a separate topic.

And the students are the ones doing the cooking so they really take the hands-on part seriously.

And they really learn the skills before they go home.

They get to take a bag of groceries home so that way they can practice the rest by at home and adapt the rest by in a way that makes it work for their family.

And it helps ease their budget while they're in the class.

We also do a grocery store tour with a local grocery t store and go through and find the foods that they were talking about that they may not have had before.

And they get a $10 gift card to go through and buy something from every food group.

>> najahe sherman: who can take these classes?

Is there a cap limit on the number of students?

>> right now they're on pause because we are waiting for guidance to what we can do and when we can gather again and when we can use the facilities that we were using before.

But once that restarts, we try and keep it to 20 people or less per class.

And we're going to try and have classes pretty much every six to eight weeks, having a new class start.

>> najahe sherman: so if people are interested, how can they take part?

>> you can e-mail us at cookingmat matters at hys.org and we'll get you information and when classes start up again we can e-mail you.

Also, because it's for low-income families we don't want transportation to be a issue.

So we have classes all over the community.

So they're in tons of different areas from new hope to here.

So it will be close to you.

>> najahe sherman: thank you so much for joining us tonight.

And thank you for all that you do.

We'll see you back here
