Academy Says Streaming Movies Can Now Win Oscars The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors met over Zoom to discuss the changes, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter.’ Direct-to-streaming movies will now qualify as long as they are available on the voting body’s Academy Screening Room streaming service.

Films will no longer be required to have a one-week theatrical run in Los Angeles.

Films may now also have week-long runs in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta.

The 93rd Academy Awards are set to take place February 27, 2021.
