On Saturday, local groups dropped off their homemade masks.

To test ?thousand iowans everyday./// it's been a busy week for minnesotans... as they participated in a statewide mas?making drive.

Today?

Local fire departments were ready to accept those donations.

The goal is for the state to collect as many as they can for those living and working in congregate living facilities.

Kimt news three's maleeha kamal checked in with one of the dro?off sites and has the story.xxx the state of minnesota wants to make sure you're covered.

That's why governor tim walz called on minnesotans to get out their neddle and thread and help make masks.

Many local groups answered the call... nats pastor george: "when this pandemic first came up we realized that the community was not prepared for something of this magnitude.

Including autumn ridge church in rochester.

Look live: hundreds of masks were made this week by members of autumn ridge church... some of these masks were donated to the rochester fire department.

The church group is known as "a time for women."

Pastor george beech says they ran short on supplies... but when there's a will there's a way.

Pastor sot: "so they are coming up with creative ways to make mask and they just have been doing them together.

Some people will make 10 in a day and somebody will make 20 in a day but together we are making hundreds and giving hundreds away to our community."

The women managed to make five hundred masks in a week.

Today they were brought to fire station three.

Ben davis with the rochester fire department says these masks may not be able to protect 10?

Percent from covi?19... but it is the first line of defense.

Firefighter sot: "a cloth mask is just a barrier that keeps the wearer germs from being spread on surfaces.

In theory if we are wearing these masks then we shouldn't be spreading germs to other people."

Pastor sot: "and for me it's a sign of care when you walk into a store and you see someone wearing a mask it's not that they aren't going to get it.

Its that they don't want to share it with others because you can be asymptomatic and carry the virus and not even know it.

And by wearing the mask you're protecting others in your community."
