City officials in Chico are moving vulnerable homeless people into hotel rooms to protect them from the coronavirus.

In the past week the city of chico keeps helping get homeless and vulnerable people off the streets and into a safe place during the pandemic.

Action news now reporter kristian lopez is live near city hall.

Kristianãyou first reported the city was doing this last week.

How many people has the city helped so far so far the city's put about 60 homeless up in hotels and that number keeps growing.

Half of those people came from the torres shelter.

Workers went through and identified their most vulnerable guests and put them into hotel rooms. the other half were homeless people - scattered around town with nowhere to go.

Joy amaro, who is the homeless solutions coordinator for the city of chico says they're all older than 65 or have a chronic medical condition.

Working with volunteers and the target team they were able identify people and transport them into hotel rooms, that number continues to grow, we receive calls all the time from service providers who know of other individuals who meet that criteria as well.

She says all of them are now stabilized and the city's providing different services for them, and the jesus center is delivering meals daily.

Joy says all of these people are very happy and grateful for all the help they are getting during this time.
