This week's Salute the Badge series honors the Atchison Police Department's newest service to the community.

Week's salute the badge series takes us down to atchison where the local police department is helping put smilies on families faces during the coronavirus pandemic.

Kq2's ron johnson shows us how.

<<ron johnson reporting many of us are finding new ways to celebrate birthdays in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic.now the atchison police department is getting in on the fun.

We're keeping our social distance but yet the communication is very clear you know and we're all looking for a reason to smile.

This week, they've started a new service offering parades to families in the small town with kids under 12 who can't have regular birthday parties.

It's hard for them to understand why they can't have birthday parties and why they can't go to the parks and get on the playgrounds and go to school and be with their friends.

The idea posted to social media, quickly caught onit absolutely caught fire on facebook.

This thing, its going nuts and its absolutely amazing it so much fun.

The missura family, the first to set up a parade with the department for their son alex who turns six this week.

We couldn't have a traditional birthday party so we wanted to do something special and something that would still make him feel special on his birthday.

When the traditional things can't really happen you really just kind of gotta think outside the box.

Our little neighborhood parade grew to be a city parade with friends and family joined in.

The birthday boy himself telling us this year will the one he remembersi saw some of my friends, that made me really happy.

I might have this honking stuck in my head for a long long time.atchison police officers telling us that's what it's all about, putting smiles on faces one honk, at a time.

That's the most important thing is just to put a smile on somebody's face, there's no contact with people right now so there needs to be that human contact.

Ron johnson kq2 news.>> the atchison police department started this service yesterday and already they have several requests for future parades.

Anyone in atchison with kids under twelve can request one.
