Public Bathrooms for the Homeless

Public Bathrooms have been placed at two shelters in Lexington that will be opened 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

The mandatory closures of businesses and public area has affected most people in some capacity, but one group has had to deal with issues that most people do not have to normally think about...where to use the restroom.

Abc 36's amber freeman has more on what's being done to accomodate homeless people in lexington.

### the lexington office of homelessness prevention and intervention... is working hard to make basic neccessities open and available for the homeless population in central kentucky.

Temporary bathrooms have been put in place outside of two city shelters and are available for anyone to use 24 hours a day seven days a week.

There are currently three located outside the catholic action center and six outside of the hope center, all of which are monitored at all times.

Director polly ruddick says...as public restrooms were closed due to the coronavirus, there still remained a need to have facilities available overnight and during off hours... to those not staying in shelters.

Those that arn't at catholic action that might eat down there, those residents tbat arn't staying at hope center, but may go to jacobson's cafeteria...so we needed some options for bathrooms since public areas like parks and libraries were closing.

Ruddick says her office worked with the division of parks and recreation to have them delivered.

They will stay as long as necessary.

She also says there are more bathrooms, as well as shower facilities, available at many public shelters, but they are only open certain days and during specific hours.

You can find a link to that schedule, as well as more information on what's being done to help those who are currently homeless on our website, wtvq.com.
