American Red Cross launching virtual mental health training for public

The American Red Cross is launching a virtual mental health training program for the public in response to COVID-19.

People struggling during this statewide "stay at home" requirement.

This program is one of many ways the organization is working to problem solve during this pandemic.

News 18's micah upshaw tells us more.

Micah: american red cross is now offering psychological first aid courses to the public.

Wendy: people are dealing with anxiety of not only staying at home, but the fear of being infected by the virus.

Micah: this training has always been offered to red cross disaster relief trainees.

But wendy starr, chair of the central indiana american red cross says these days call for all hands on deck.

Wendy: we think people need to know the signs and that's what psychological first aid is all about it's what are the signs and if there are certain signs, how do we help the client get through their need.

Micah: the training can be done virtually on a website, and it's free for all users.

Starr suggests parents and employers take the training during this time.

Wendy: this might be an opportunity to just keep an eye on everybody because that's what we're here for.

We're all, just like we did in the blood drive it's community helping community.

The blood drive was one red cross entity hit hardest when the coronavirus began rapidly spreading in the united states.

But after educating the community and changing their blood donations protocol, starr says tippecanoe county has really stepped up.

Wendy: it has been an overwhelming response from our community, we can not believe how many organizations and individuals have chipped in to make up for the lost blood supply related to cancellations because of the coronavirus.

Micah: in tippecanoe county, micah upshaw, news 18.+ american red cross has also launched its "zero to hero" program.

It's a virtual training for people interested in volunteering in disaster relief.
