A long-awaited trial in a civil lawsuit filed by New York's attorney general last year kicked off on Tuesday.
According to Reuters, the state is accusing Exxon Mobil Corp of defrauding investors out of up to $1.6 billion.
The state opened by saying Exxon used two sets of books to hide the true cost of climate change regulations from investors.
In response, an attorney for the oil giant assailed the claims as false and politically motivated.
The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
