Beto Back-Pedals

Beto O'Rourke is back-peddling on his push to punish religious institutions for not complying with gay marriage laws.

He backtracked on his claim earlier this month that religious organizations should be taxed if they did not perform gay marriage.

O'Rourke said churches and other religious nonprofits should maintain their tax-exempt status.

However, he said they should be legally obliged not to discriminate against gay and transgender people.

O'Rourke's campaign has been floundering.

His push against religious institutions was met with ire on all sides of the political spectrum.

The plan to punish churches has been called anti-religion, ignorant, unenforceable, and unconstitutional.
